Sports Agenda for Tuesday (5/8/12)

Big Story:
The Marlins have become the hottest team in the majors while playing away from Marlins Park; The Heat can breathe easier about the Knicks lineup; and rumors of Florida State to the Big XII, yeah right.

Quote of the Day:
"Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." – John F. Kennedy

Marlins: (@ Houston Astros, 8:05 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
Wait, I thought the Marlins stunk again this year?
I don't know what Ozzie said to these guys before the West Coast road trip, but say it some more!
These guys are playing like we thought they could and are really in the groove.
They are undefeated in May and have won their last seven games in a row.
Last night, we saw a gem of a pitching display from Carlos Zambrano.
Big Z tossed a 3-hit shutout and Hanley Ramirez and Mike Stanton continued to swing big sticks as of late.
But Zambrano is the story.
Remember his huge public meltdown on the Cubs and him quitting the team just after midseason?
It may have been the best thing to happen to him because he's a different person and different pitcher than he has been in a long time.
This season, Z is 1-2, but his losses have come after the bullpen let him down.
More importantly, his shutout last night dropped his ERA to 1.98 for the season.
NICE.
Tonight, the Marlins send Anibal Sanchez to the mound with his 2-0 record and 2.43 ERA.
Anibal has been averaging about 5.2 innings per start and has a 2.14 ERA over his last 3 appearances.
If the Marlins can win tonight, then we get to see if Josh Johnson can get it going.
If the Marlins can sweep the Astros, it will be one heckuva start to May.
We also may need to keep the Marlins on the road for a while.
The team returns home for five games against the Mets and Pirates starting Friday night.

Heat: (off Tuesday)
Thanks to my compadres in New York, we had the story first that Jeremy Lin is not likely to play in Game 5 Wednesday night.
Why is that important to Heat fans you ask?
Because guess who will be the starting point guard for the New York Knicks?
Go ahead….guess.
Mike Bibby.
Yes, that Mike Bibby.
I don't want to say he's slow at this stage of his career, well, yes I do.
The Heat will still have to give him some coverage on defense because he can still shoot the three.
But in a transition game, he's toast.
While talking to CBSNewyork yesterday, I said "let a Heat fan tell you about having Mike Bibby at point." The response, "We Know. SCARY!"
So, now that the Heat can run them out of the building Wednesday, it's time to look towards the second round.
Barring a miracle, the Heat will be playing the Indiana Pacers in Round 2.
It's funny, but every Eastern Conference playoff series is currently at 3-1 right now.
I think Indiana and Boston are the biggest hurdles for the Heat.
If the Heat play their game, and Spo doesn't draw up another questionable final play, no one in the East can stop them.
Now the Western Conference, I originally had Oklahoma City, but I'm changing horses to the Spurs.
I'm just not sure any team can matchup with their depth and I still believe Pop is the best coach in the game….period.
I'd love to see the Heat and the Spurs in the Finals…mainly so I could watch one of my all-time favorite players….TIMMMMAAHHHHH Duncan!
Timmahhhh.

Florida State rumors:
So there's been a small buzz going around about Florida State possibly being interested in the Big XII.
I will go on the record right now and say they are completely wrong.
There's no way FSU would even think about doing that.
Look, eventually we're going to have about 4 superconferences and everyone else in college football.
The superconferences will be the SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12, and probably the ACC.
The Big XII offers FSU nothing of value other than opening up the Texas recruiting grounds.
They already have a wide reach there, so why bother.
The Big XII would love to get FSU because it would open up Florida to their teams, but again it's not going to happen.
So you ask how do I know that?
Let me ask you something which one of these conferences looks better to you:
Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, Syracuse
Or
Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, West Virginia
Game, set, match to the ACC for football and basketball.
Look, the Seminoles' preference has long probably been the SEC, but UF is petrified of that and will block it as long as possible.
This round of conference realignment is over and FSU isn't going anywhere.
But you say how did Mizzou get the SEC bid?
Two reasons, one is the SEC needed another member to balance the divisions.
Second, Mizzou is part of the elite Association of American Universities.
So the SEC increased their academic standing by inviting Mizzou, opened up St. Louis and Kansas City television markets, and added a school that has been rising in both football and basketball.
FSU isn't going anywhere, sorry to rain on anyone's parade who thought otherwise.
