Sports Agenda for Tuesday (5/22/12)

Big Story:
Good lord can Giancarlo Stanton hit the ball. The Miami Heat start the series anew with a best 2 out of 3 set with the Pacers. And let's talk some football both pro and collegiate!

Quote of the Day: (it's a long one but a good one)
"Rather than using information to illuminate the world, though, we consume it like fuel. The more we burn, the faster we go. The faster we go, the less we see and understand. We slow down only for the accidents along the side of the road; and the biggest accident still lies ahead. Only, I fear, when that occurs -- only when the combined impact of too many unemployed, too many foreclosures, too much debt, exacerbated by two undeclared and unfunded wars; only when the human and social costs of a crumbling education system and a flawed health care system, leave us wondering where and why we lost our footing as a nation, will we come to realize that WHAT is communicated to us is vastly more important than the medium by which it is conveyed." – Ted Koppel…someone call Marshall Mcluhan

Miami Heat: (vs. Indiana Pacers, 8 p.m.)
Ah yes, we are finally here again with the Heat set to take the court tonight looking to take the lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Can they do it?
Well, again it doesn't fall on the shoulders of LeBron and Wade, they will get theirs.
It's a question of who will step up to help.
I still believe it needs to be a combination of Mario Chalmers and Udonis Haslem.
Let's face it, at this point in their careers, Mike Miller and Shane Battier are to shooting what George W. Bush is to public speaking.
UD stepped up and hit multiple big shots last game as he decided to finally work the pick and pop rather than the pick and roll.
So what's the difference?
The pick and roll works like this: (we'll use LeBron and Udonis as our players)
LeBron is dribbling at the top of the key (middle part of the court past the three point line). Udonis will come up to roughly the three point line or maybe just inside the three point line and set a pick. What that means is Udonis will stand still and try to block LeBron's man from continuing to defend him for a second or so.
Once that happens, LeBron goes around the pick and Udonis' defender has to pick up LeBron and defend him. You can get mismatches that way as LeBron drives to the basket against either a slower big man, or a shorter guard/forward.
Traditionally, after Udonis sets the pick, he will "roll" beside and behind LeBron to the basket looking for an easy hoop near the basket on a pass from LeBron.
But Indiana has cut off the roll part with their big men. So what Udonis did to perfection last game was instead of rolling to the basket behind LeBron, he popped outside and was wide open for a mid-range jumpshot of about 15-17 feet which he drained after LeBron passed him the ball.
Here's where it can get fun.
If the defense of the Pacers chooses to double-team LeBron (a wise idea), he will pass the ball to Udonis. If Indiana's defense rotates around with another defender to guard Udonis, he can either pass it back outside to Chalmers or look for Wade slashing to the basket.
Of course that only works for players like LeBron and Udonis who can hit outside shots.
Joel Anthony…not so much.
So, I expect UD to work the pick and pop a lot tonight until the Pacers make an adjustment to defend it.
What will happen then is one of the Pacers' big men (Roy Hibbert/David West) will come outside to challenge Udonis' shot. When they do that, Wade and LeBron have wide open lanes to attack the basket and draw the fouls.
Make no mistake, the Heat need to go to the basket all night long because if they get Hibbert in foul trouble, it's a totally different game and easily winnable for the Heat.
My pick?
I'll say Heat – 87 Pacers – 82

Marlins: (vs. Colorado Rockies, 7:10 p.m.)
I don't want to say Giancarlo Stanton has found the groove or anything, but he hit that ball so far it needed a stewardess on it.
The outfielder would've needed a rocket up his rear to catch that one.
Okay, enough.
Still, when he came up to the plate with the bases loaded, I told my son who was watching television with me….watch this!
I had no idea he would slam it, but I figured a power hitter against a noodle-armed pitcher was a matchup that favored the Marlins.
Perhaps the best news was Mark Buehrle calmed down and threw one hit ball after a very brutal first inning.
Buehrle received a standing ovation when he left in the 8th inning.
And even better news….Heath Bell registered another save…wait, what?!
Yup, things are clicking for the Marlins in May.
They've lost a total of five games this month and are just starting a 10 game homestand.
If they can sweep the Rockies and Giants ahead of the Nationals visit next week, the Fish could be staring at first place soon.
Someone tell me what they're drinking now cause I want some of it!

College Football:
The Big East is scared, the SEC is about to go big, and is the super conference here?
The Big East wants preference given to standing-based conference champions when selecting what teams will play in the four-team playoff for the national championship.
Of course they do.
They're the worst league and know that only if the champions were given preference would they ever sniff a chance to play for the championship.
If you're not familiar with the college playoff coming in 2014, here's a quick overview.
It will be a final four type setup with four seeded teams with number one playing number four and number two playing number three.
Then the winners will play for the big prize.
The only question is how to select the teams.
The Big East, Pac-12, and ACC want preference given for conference champions and their not be a selection committee.
The other side is the Big Ten, Big XII, and SEC who prefer a selection committee.
I think it has to be a selection committee. Then we can finally understand how the teams are selected instead of some arbitrary computer formula that the computer geeks won't share with anyone.
But we'll find out more about that next month.
Then there's this….
According to Sports Business Daily, the SEC will reopen negotiations with ESPN/CBS to become the highest paid conference in the country.
It will happen I'm pretty sure with the addition of Texas A&M and Mizzou.
Plus, the SEC wants to work with ESPN to finally start an SEC Network to rival that of the Big Ten Network and the looming Pac-12 Network.
How much could that be worth?
Well, the Big Ten Network helped pay the schools tv revenue of $25 million last year.
Ka-CHING!

Miami Dolphins:
The Fins begin organized team activities Tuesday with a few areas to watch.
First, don't expect rookie right tackle Jonathan Martin to be there. He can't participate until after graduation, which for Stanford is in June.
Matt Moore will likely start out as the starting quarterback, but I'm guessing they'll give Garrard and Tannehill some looks.
Who's starting at safety? That's a question they'll have to answer, luckily they have plenty of options.
I'm pulling for Jimmy Wilson cause the kid's a ball hawk and has the best story out there.
What will the new 4-3 hybrid defense look like?
And what receiver will step up to be the go-to man for the quarterback now that Brandon Marshall is gone?
Lots of questions, and just a few months to answer them before the 2012 season.
We're on our way to football season already…..SCHWEET!
