Sports Agenda for Thursday (8/30/12)
Big Story:
College football is back tonight baby!!! The Dolphins hit a jet last night, which was the first time a Jet has connected with anything this preseason! The Dolphins still stink. And the Marlins, well, are the Marilns.
Quote of the Day:
"Men are so simple and so much inclined to obey immediate needs that a deceiver will never lack victims for his deceptions." – Niccolo Machiavelli
College Football:
Oh how I have missed thee.
But you return in all your glory tonight.
So what do we get for college football's return tonight? We get a Top 20 team in South Carolina and an upstart Wazzu team later in the evening.
Here's what you need to know about South Carolina….
If running back Marcus Lattimore is back at full strength, this team is going to probably win the SEC East.
Lattimore, when fully healthy, is a Heisman-caliber back, he's that good.
But, he's coming back from a torn ACL and we'll find out just how far back he is starting tonight against Vanderbilt.
Defensively, if you want to see arguably the best defensive end in all of college football, watch USC's defense tonight.
Remember this name: Jadaveon Clowney
Kid is a beast and is only a sophomore. He will push the pocket against anyone and will make Vandy's quarterback's night very, very long.
Now, as for the nightcap, we'll see the return of Mike Leach to the sidelines at Wazzu.
He's going to make schools like Miami regret not giving him a chance.
I was thinking about it this morning…what if UM had hired him and given him the speed of Florida recruits with his Air Raid offense.
One word: YIKES.
Seriously, he's got a good quarterback in Jeff Tuel and a stud receiver, whose name slips my mind but I think it's Marquess Wilson.
For Leach, that's enough to run through people….remember Michael Crabtree?
Look, Leach will have to take a year or two, but he'll have Wazzu competitive this year.
And I'm all for it, because his Playstation offense is going to be fun to watch.
That's what to watch for tonight…..we'll have more on Saturday's game tomorrow.
Miami Dolphins:
I try to look on the bright side when it comes to football, but I just have to be completely honest right here.
The Miami Dolphins are going to suck.
I hate using that word, but it's the most succinct way of putting it this season.
There's no room for hope right now as a bad roster looks just as bad on the field.
The Dolphins were winless in the preseason, but it wasn't just that.
They didn't improve throughout the preseason and several players looked like they actually regressed.
The corners couldn't hold down anyone, and yes, they are going to miss Vontae Davis.
The offensive line and offensive production was just awful throughout the preseason.
The defense, well, they couldn't stop anyone even in the running game.
Seriously, I'm trying to find something positive to write here….
Well, the kicking game is solid for the Dolphins.
They also probably have the fewest felons of any team in the NFL.
So they have that going for them.
It wasn't just that Miami lost, it was they looked just as bad as possible in the loss.
They just looked like they couldn't win no matter what.
Again, I go back to who put this team together, general manager Jeff Ireland.
He's been pulling the strings for five years now and this is what he's put together on the field.
I don't care if his first draft was run by Bill "Overrated" Parcells, he's been in charge and this is the best he can do.
Based on how Miami looked in the preseason, it looks like Suck for Luck may have come one year too late.
Plus, quarterback isn't the issue for the Fins…it's the wide receivers, linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties, tight ends, and defensive ends.
Other than that, the Fins are okay I guess.
And mark my words on this one….now that Vontae is gone, teams like the Patriots are going to line up in 4-5 WR sets and see if Nolan Carroll and Quentin Lawrence can cover them. Based on the early results, Miami is going to give up a whole lotta passing yards.
Remember too, that first game of the year is against one of the toughest defenses in the NFL, Houston, who loves, LOVES to rush the passer. And you're going in without Jake Long to protect the blind side.
There's that word again….YIKES!
Miami Marlins: (off today)
Well, the Marlins did split a two-game series with the Nationals.
So they have that going for them.
For those keeping score at home…the Marlins are 59-72 on the season, or 20 games out of first place.
On the bright side, the Marlins are just 2.5 games from getting out of last place.
The Marlins have an off day today. I was going to make the obvious joke about every day being an off day for the Marlins, but that's too obvious.
