Sports Agenda For Thursday (5/31/12)
Big Story:
Rajon Rondo and the Celtics left it all on the floor last night and still couldn't overcome a heat team still missing a man. The Marlins are just playing ridiculous baseball right now. And fun with stats with Reggie Bush!
Quote of the Day:
"Why is it when it begins to rain in South Florida, 90 percent of drivers shift gears from drive to moron?" – me this morning on the Turnpike.
Miami Heat: (off Thursday)
As I about to say to my little boy last night just before taking him to the ER, that's how you play basketball.
First, since the haters are drinking their haterade, LeBron took the final shot and missed.
Big freaking deal.
Last night, the Boston Celtics gave everything they could to the Miami Heat.
Rajon Rondo scored 44 and Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett combined to score 39 points.
It still wasn't enough.
The Celtics were executing their offense, hitting open shots, diving after the ball, and it's still not enough.
So I'll say it right now.
The Celtics are done. Put it in the bank. Put it to bed. This series is over.
Now for the Heat, I have a simple comment.
CAN ANYONE HIT A FREAKING FREE THROW??!?!
Seriously, these guys shot 66 percent from the charity stripe.
They make three or four more and the game never made it to overtime.
But that's my biggest complaint, which says something about how well the Heat are playing.
I cringed at seeing the Heat take 26 three-pointers, but Boston dared them to shoot it and Miami made them pay.
How about Rio's game too? He scored 22 points had 4 rebounds and 6 assists.
As for Mr. James, he had a ho-hum night of 34 points, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists.
How nice is it as fans to have a player who can do that every night and still have plenty in the tank.
You have to love how he got his points too.
He struggled from the field 7-20 but got 24 free throws and made 18 of them. So he had more than half his points from the free throw line.
Not bad kid, not bad at all.
Also, even though he's still struggling from the field, Battier's defense is as advertised and a key component with Bosh still nursing his strained abdominal muscle.
Finally, Udonis Haslem just hits big shots. His jumper was on last night. The best way to see how he will shoot from the field is watch to see if he releases the shot at the top of his jump.
If he does, then he's dialed in and deadly that night. If he doesn't, he's likely to struggle from the field.
But again, Boston hit Miami with everything they had and took the game to overtime.
Yet Miami still came out ahead in the end.
As of now, we're looking at a Heat vs. Spurs NBA Finals, which will make this fan very happy.
Nevertheless, the Heat MUST have Bosh back for the NBA Finals if they want to take the NBA Championship.
Miami Marlins: (off Thursday)
That's how you top off a phenomenal run in the month of May.
You know things are going well when Josh Johnson gets the win and pitches well through six innings of work.
The victory last night completed a three-game sweep of the first-place Washington Nationals.
That moved Florida to just 0.5 games behind the Nats in the NL East.
A 21-win month of May will usually do that for you.
And I don't want to go on about Giancarlo Stanton, but he cranked 12 homers in May.
I believe that tied him with Josh Hamilton for the major league lead in the month of May.
Speaking of Stanton, he raised his average to .304 last night, which is very close to Omar Infante, who leads the team with a .317 average.
And HELLO Hanley.
He's bringing up his average and is now hitting .275 for the season.
Still, that back half of the Marlins order is abysmal.
Buck is hitting just .164 on the season and Chris Coghlan is batting .134 on the season.
Yikes and Guh!
If you're a pitcher and you can make it through Logan Morrison in the batting order, you're good to go, cause the rest of the lineup is just bad right now.
But the season is still very young, the Fish have played just 51 games so far.
But, for the month of May, no one played better baseball in MLB than your Miami Marlins.
Almost forgot, Heath Bell picked up his 10th save last night and dropped his ERA to 7.20
Still an ugly ERA, but it's another save in the last few games, which is a good sign for Marlins fans going forward.
Miami Dolphins:
As promised before, some eye-opening stats regarding the Dolphins' ground game.
If you remember last year, Reggie Bush broke out with a 1,000 yard rushing season, which no one, least of all me, thought he had in him.
But do the numbers at the end of the year tell the whole story?
Well, it kinda depends.
In the final four games of the 2011 season, Bush ran for 519 yards.
By itself, that would have been the third best season of his NFL career.
But, those four games came against the league's 32nd, 19th, 24th, and 27th ranked defenses in yards per carry.
Still, you play against the schedule you were given and do your best against anyone in your way.
Bush said he wants to lead the league in rushing this year.
Hey, stranger things have happened!
