Sports Agenda for Thursday (5/17/12)

Big Story:
I spelled Agenda right! But seriously, the Heat return to the court tonight for Game 3 hoping to get a lift from someone besides the Big Three. The Marlins thumped the Braves last night and play again today. And news and notes from around the football world.

Quote of the Day:
"Friendship is not something you learn in school. But if you haven't learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven't learned anything." –Muhammad Ali

Miami Heat: (@ Indiana Pacers, Game 3, 7:00 p.m.)
The Miami Heat take the court again tonight hoping to make Tuesday's debacle a flash in the pan that doesn't reflect the overall team.
If you don't know what I'm about to say about how the Heat should win….why are you not reading the agenda every day?
The bottom line is someone from the following group of players has to get into double-figures tonight:
Mike Miller, Shane Battier, Mario Chalmers, Udonis Haslem.
Out of that group, I'd lean towards Chalmers being the most likely to get to double figures.
But the Heat have to have some help for LeBron and D-Wade.
No matter how great they are, they can't beat Indiana with just the two of them scoring.
In Game 2, LeBron and Wade scored 21 of the Heat's 23 points in the fourth quarter.
Look, there are two of the best in the world, but it's not going to work if the rest of the team can't put the ball in the hole.
I was tempted to leave Miller off the list because he's washed up at this point in his career.
Udonis Haslem should still be able to give you a double-double a night if he's playing to his potential, but his shot has been just awful this year.
Battier can score in bunches, but he has been throwing up airballs recently and well, that's far from what the Heat need.
That's why I picked Chalmers, and maybe his point guard running mate Norris Cole, as the players who can give the team a spark in scoring.
Let me put it this way…if the Heat have LeBron and Wade at their best and get 10 points from Chalmers and/or someone else, this series is over.
As for Chris Bosh….
I'm beginning to think his season is done.
When I looked at the injury again, he reached for his abdomen and his groin.
If he hurt one of the muscles that stretches between the two, he can't shoot, run, and so forth.
Plus, if he was going to be available, the Heat would have put a timeline on his recovery.
So it looks like we're going to find out just how good LeBron and Wade's supporting cast are.
If Game 2 was an indication, my gut tells me LeBron and D-Wade may be watching the Conference and NBA Finals on television.
I said at the beginning of the Big Three, the salaries they are paid is going to kill the overall team.
If the three of them had agreed to take say $5 million less per season, the Heat would have lots of wiggle room to go get some great role players.
As it is now, LeBron and D-Wade may not be able to hoist a trophy this year.

Miami Marlins: (@Atlanta Braves, 7:05 p.m.)
Man, I guess all the Marlins have to do is go on the road and they beat the snot out of people.
Mark Buehrle continues to pitch like the ace of the staff and Giancarlo Stanton continues to hit BOMBS on the road.
I love the way Omar Infante is playing.
He's leading the team in average at .336 and went 3-5 last night and scored twice.
Here's what I don't like…
Gaby Sanchez and John Buck.
Both are hitting around the Mendoza line and I think if the Marlins could, they'd send Sanchez down.
Thing is, they don't have a capable backup at first base, so they have to ride out Sanchez's slump.
I don't know what to do with Buck, because he's a solid catcher defensively, he just can't hit for anything this season.
I'm talking he has a .198 average and left four men on base last night while striking out twice.
Guh.
The teams go at it again tonight with the Marlins sending out Ricky Nolasco to face the Bravos.
Fun facts from the Fish:
They are now tied for third in the NL East with the Mets.
Nolasco and Steve Cishek lead the pitching staff with 4 wins on the season.

Football notes:
Things are getting ugly in New Orleans. The Saints won't sign Drew Brees to a long-term extension. I don't want to say that's STUPID, but even George W. Bush knows that it's a good financial decision to keep Brees.
Cleveland Browns running back Trent Richardson said he will continue to seek out contact and run through tackles for a 16 game season. Yeah…right.
Brandon Marshall thinks the Bears have the best leader in Jay Cutler. Well, he would know with the lack of leadership for the Dolphins the last few years.
The Big Ten won't let the Rose Bowl go and will force everyone to abide by that. Yknow, I think the BCS and such should have a majority rule vote and that way no one conference can submarine the process.
Trouble ahead for the BCS is that the ACC wants only conference champions to be eligible for the National Championship playoff. That's fitting since most of their conference champions wouldn't be in the top 4 anyways. It won't happen though, it's going to be either a selection committee (my preference) or the top 4 ranked teams in some sort of computer/human hybrid poll.
Mizzou is fitting right in with the SEC. Their backup quarterback, who could be the starter if James Franklin hasn't recovered from shoulder surgery, Corbin Berkstresser was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident. Apparently he hit a 1990's Oldsmobile and caused more than $1,000 worth of damage and left the scene. My question, how do you cause $1,000 worth of damage to a car that probably isn't worth $1,000?
