Sports Agenda for Monday (5/7/12)
Big Story:
Miami Dolphins linebacker Cameron Wake finally hits paydirt with the team; the Heat, what the heck; and the Marlins are the hottest team in baseball in May?
Quote of the Day:
"When you're born, you get a ticket to the freak show. When you're born in America, you get a front row seat." – George Carlin
Heat: (off until Wednesday)
Really Miami?
REALLY?
You lost to the Knicks in the playoffs?
THE FREAKING KNICKS???
Remember I wrote long ago that this team needed one extra scorer to show up to win a championship?
Yeah, no one else showed up past the Big Three yesterday afternoon.
It didn't help that Wade couldn't shoot a free throw to save his life.
He shot under 40 percent from the line….40 PERCENT!!!!
The Heat as a team shot 16 percent from behind the three-point line, which means they made 3 more than I did last night.
Seriously, that was one UGLY, UGLY game the Heat didn't deserve to win.
What happened to LeBron's defense?
Melo gets 41?
I get it guys, you want to win at home, but c'mon man, you're playing the woeful Knicks.
I didn't quite get the whole gameplan yesterday, but whatever it was, it didn't work.
This is how bad the game was Sunday….combined the teams had 36 assists, 54 fouls, and 64 free throw attempts.
GUH!
So what does Miami have to do to close out this series?
Well, Wade has to be able to make a free throw.
He also needs to ditch the 3-point shot unless he's truly in a groove.
LeBron needs to shoot better from the floor because 9-21 ain't gonna cut it going forward.
Past that, I'm still not sold on Udonis being a starting player.
He's just been awful this year trying to score.
I'm in favor of sitting Udonis, starting Battier, and bringing Udonis, Miller, and Anthony off the bench.
More energy off the bench, better defense in your starting five.
Just a thought.
It's just a question of shooting at this point and Sunday, the Heat…well they shot about like I do from the field….and that's not pretty.
Marlins: (@ Houston Astros, 8:05 p.m., Fox Sports Florida)
I hate to say this, but the fact that the Marlins have a much better record on the road than at home makes me laugh.
Why you ask?
Think about it, all the taxpayers who will pay for this brand new baseball cathedral now watch the team go down in flames at the new park while playing gangbusters on the road.
The Marlins have swept back to back series' with the Giants and Padres…it's fun to go to California.
Now they travel to Houston for three with the Astros that the Fish should be able to win.
With the win Sunday, the Marlins have climbed out of the cellar in the NL East and are now just 1 game behind the Mets for third.
The win also gave Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco his 68th win with the Fish, which tied the record set by Dontrelle Willis.
Kudos to Nolasco who is also 4-0 on the young season.
Some of the best news for the Marlins is that Mike Giancarlo Stanton is finally swinging a big stick and the rest of the team is finally hitting again.
Today, Big Z goes for the Marlins in Houston.
Zambrano has pitched very well for the Marlins so far this young season.
Big Z is 0-2, mainly due to poor run support or blown saves…needless to say if Heath Bell's coming in, Zambrano is probably going to throw up .
Zambrano, who was left for dead by the Cubs and everyone else, has a 2.53 ERA this season in 32 innings pitched along with 23 strikeouts to 13 walks.
Miami Dolphins:
Still trying to get the exact details of the contract, but it's a multi-year deal worth $49 million for Cameron Wake.
It's a triumph for Wake who started his career in the CFL and has gone on to become one of the most dominant outside linebackers in the NFL.
If I'm running a 3-4 defense, I'm picking either him or Clay Matthews with my first defensive pick.
How much of a jackpot is it for Wake?
Well, he was scheduled to make $615,000 this season.
KA-CHING!
Now, the Dolphins have to get Jake Long's contract under control and probably extend either Dansby or Bush for more friendly cap numbers.
That way you free up lots of cap space for next year when Brandon Marshall and Vernon Carey's dead money I believe comes off the books.
After Long, the next in line for a contract extension will likely be Vontae Davis and possibly Sean Smith.
If my numbers are right, the Fins have spent around $67 million towards next year's cap, or a little more than half of it.
Some more cap management is needed for the next few years, but thing finally look like they're coming around for the Fins.
Hey, anyone heard from Braylon Edwards? He's a tall, fast receiver who's still a free agent.
Not what he once was, but could still give you some plays…possibly.
