MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Tempers flared at Tuesday evening's Hialeah council meeting over plans for a new apartment development near a residential area.
Homeowners are furious about the proposal to build "Villa De Las Palmas," a 240 unit apartment building, in the area of 9th Avenue and W 35th Street. They say they don't want the building and the traffic it would bring.
But their pleas to stop the plan fell on deaf ears - the counsel approved it.
"We feel today betrayed by the council, all seven of them, I think there was a huge conflict of interest," said Pedro Romero.
"I want to thank the council, I want to thank the City of Hialeah for their vision for this project, we've just taken an important first step today," said Hugo Arza, who represents the property owner behind the project.
An attorney for the residents said they can file an administrative appeal that will be heard by the state.
