MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- The father of the man who opened fire at an Orlando nightclub - killing at least 49 people - says his family is in shock.

"My family is completely, we are shocked. We cant believe what did he do," said Seddique Mir Mateen - father of Omar Mateen. "I don't allow nobody to do any kind of crime or terrorist act inside the United States."

As for why his son opened fire into Pulse nightclub, he said at a press conference in his Port St. Lucie home Monday that he didn't know.

"I don't know why he did what he did. I wasn't aware of it and I always paid attention that he should get higher education and serve the United States of America," said Seddique.

At least 50 others were injured in the attack.

On Monday, friends and family were anxiously waiting for the names of those who died in the attack to be released. At last check, at least 20 names had been released.

For those families, Seddique had this to say.

"I am very sorry and I am very upset that he did what he did inside the United States," he said. "Those people who lost their loved ones. They are my family and I apologize for what my son did and I am sad and as mad as you because you are my family."

As for those injured, he had well wishes for them.

"You people that are injured. I wanted, I hope from God that they have a speedy recovery," said Seddique.

His son died during a standoff with authorities early Sunday morning.

According to CNN, Mateen tried to buy body armor weeks ago and traveled to Saudi Arabia twice for pilgrimage. He attended the same mosque as Moner Mohammad Abusalha - an American suicide bomber from Florida who blew himself up in Syria in May of 2014.

The ex-wife of Omar Mateen, Sitora Yusufiy revealed during a press conference that he repeatedly beat her while they were married.

"He was very short tempered...because I was the only one in his life, most of the violence was toward me most of the time," she said.

Sitora who stood next to her current fiance during the press conference,  said she met Mateen online about eight years ago and decided to move to Florida and marry him.

The couple was only together four months. She said the marriage was normal at first before he became abusive.

Meantime, law enforcement is trying to find out more about Omar Mateen. In a news conference Monday, U.S. Attorney Lee Bentley said they were still collecting electronic and physical evidence. They also said they did not believe there is an imminent threat to the public.

Officials said they didn't know if anyone would be charged in the Sunday's mass shooting.
