MIAMI (CBSMiami) - An arrest has been made in the death of a Florida native in Italy over the weekend.
The body of 35-year old Ashley Olsen, who was originally from Summer Haven, was found Saturday in her apartment in Florence.
The detained man has been identified as 27-year old Cheik Diaw, a Senegalese migrant known to the police for drugs-related issues, according to Florence Prosecutor Giuseppe Creazzo.
Diaw was identified with the help of surveillance cameras. He's being held based on DNA evidence recovered at the crime scene, according to sources.
The apartment was in chaos with a broken glass and a smashed chair. Clothes were strewn about and Olsen was wearing only socks.
Diaw reportedly told investigators that Olsen's death was an accident. He reportedly said he had sexual relations with her after meeting her in a club and going to her home. He said they subsequently argued and she banged her head after he pushing her, according to the prosecutor.
An autopsy found that she had been strangled with a cord or rope. He said that the bruising on her neck, which led coroners to conclude she had been strangled, resulted from his efforts to lift her up, according to the sources.
Olsen was living in Florence where her father, an architect, works at an art school.
