Authorities Investigate Deadly Police Shooting In Monterey Park

MONTEREY PARK (CBS) — A man was fatally shot after threatening a family member and police with a knife, officials said.

The shooting took place at a home in the 200 block of North McPherrin Avenue at 12:15 a.m. when officers responded to a 911 call.

They found a man, who was armed with a knife and had reportedly been threatening family members, locked in a bedroom with his mother. Officials say the suspect's brother called 911.

Wednesday evening, officials identified the dead man as Samuel Liaw, 42, of Monterey Park.

Officials said they heard the man's mother crying through a door, "Please don't kill me." The suspect threatened officers who moved to break down the door, which prompted an officer to fire a shot that fatally struck him.

"The crime scene has been locked down," Lt. David Coleman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department told CBS2. "Our investigators will process the crime scene; document the crime scene. Other investigators will interview all the parties involved inside the residence and determine exactly what happened."

No one else was injured during the family dispute or shooting.

Authorities said Liaw did not live at the residence.
