NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Food trucks are all the rage. And in this Welcome to Texas report, CBS 11 News anchor Russ McCaskey found one of the tastiest in town -- Dough Boy Donuts.
Melvin's dad, now retired from the City of Irving, helps... if you can call it that. "My dad drops a lot of the donuts moving them from the fryer to the screen and then he eats a lot of them too," the younger Roberson said laughing.
Melvin Roberson Sr. fired back, "I'm trying to put on some LB's. I need to get a little more size like by kid. So, I taste a lot."
While they have a lot of fun, the gourmet donut food truck is quickly building a following. Brian Nino and his dog Tequila sought out Dough Boys for a special gift. "It's my wife's birthday. She said to me earlier this week, 'all I want for my birthday is a fairy dust donut from Dough Boy Donuts,'" he said.
Nino walked away with two Fairy Dust and two Cap'n Crunch donuts. He was the first customer of the day, and not long after the truck was set up people started to gather. Just seeing the truck brings a smile to their faces.
"We actually work across the street, so we see the truck pull up every now and then and it's a happy day," said Charlie Howlett.
Melvin says the secret to his success is that he makes the donuts after they are ordered and always serves them up warm. He took time to teach me how to make them and being a morning guy -- I went for the Cap'n Crunch. I can tell you, a little experience goes a long way, and eventually I got it.
My efforts were met with praise, perhaps falsely, by Melvin. "Looks like you got a new career path," he said.
Melvin eventually would like to have a permanent brick-and-mortar restaurant, but says he will never give up the food truck.
