Terrell Owens Released From Allen Wranglers
ALLEN (CBSDFW.COM) - The Allen Wranglers Indoor Football League team announced on Tuesday that co-owner and WR Terrell Owens has been officially released.
"It's disappointing and unfortunate," Allen Wranglers owner John Frankel said of releasing Owens, "but (he) could no longer be tolerated by the Wrangler organization."
Owens joined the IFL team to much fanfare in February as co-owner and star player with a reported six-figure salary. The wide receiver, known for his his flamboyant touchdown celebrations and public persona, once played in the NFL for the San Francisco 49'ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals.
Owens, who was not required to play in all of the Wranglers road games caught a total of 35 passes for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight games for the Wranglers in 2012.
Per the Wranglers website, the news of the release included a note from team President and Co-Owner Tommy Benizio that told the story of what pushed the team over the edge saying, "The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for Mr. Owens was his no–show to a scheduled appearance at a local children's hospital with other Wrangler players and coaches. It is not the desire of the Allen Wranglers' organization to disappoint fans by having our most notable player miss a scheduled appearance."
Owens' ownership stake has also been terminated because he violated his contract.
