DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A workplace murder-suicide forced hundreds of workers to evacuate an office building in the 8300 block of the LBJ Freeway Service Road near Schroeder Road Monday morning.

An employee at Dignity Team Health (a hospice and home health care company) found out management was planning on firing him. Carrying a gun he typically didn't bring to work, the man walked into a meeting on the seventh floor with a female supervisor and human resources representative and started shooting, according to police.

"The shots. They were so close. You could hear the shots," one witness described.

Gunfire sent startled workers running for cover and some barricaded themselves in offices until police could reach them.

Pictures from the scene show one of the windows of the building were broken from the gunfire.

Swat officers searched each floor to make sure there were no other suspects before allowing detectives inside to begin their investigation.

"SWAT was escorting us out (of the building) and telling us to go downstairs," said one woman.

"As we were walking out, there was a police officer holding his shield and he was bleeding down his arm," recalled another woman.

One Dallas officer was injured by 'debris' after discharging his weapon to gain entry through a locked glass door. He was transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Following the evacuation and search of the property, police declared the building 'safe' just before 1 p.m.

Police have not yet released the names of the suspect or his victim.
