Mother Of 2 Survives Fatal Crash

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Martha Perez, 26, is a mother of two, the only daughter to a man who hasn't left the medical center of Arlington since Sunday. The Perez family is now praying she survives the injuries that sent her to to the intensive care unit; yet the family knows it is one of the lucky ones.
On Sunday around 2 a.m., Perez and three other friends were heading home to Fort Worth from a restaurant.
Perez was driving her navy blue Chevy Malibu. Alejandra Alvarado, 26, one of Perez's close friends from middle school was one of the passengers. Also in the car, was Maria Alexandra Rodriguez, 19, and a man in his '20s who police haven't identified.
Perez's two female friends were killed in the violent crash that police said was caused by a suspected drunk driver.
Arlington Police arrested Eldrick Westbrook, 38, at the scene. They said he was driving southbound on Matlock Road. Perez and her friends were traveling westbound on the service road of I-20. Witnesses told authorities the man blew through the red light. His silver Dodge Avenger slammed right into Perez's car, causing it to spin out and crash into a traffic light pole.
It is hard to believe anyone would survive the crash that left Perez's vehicle in pieces, but she and the young man in her car made it out alive.
Perez's family said she suffered severe head trauma and continues to fight for her life. The male passenger who survived his injuries is recovering.The choice of one man to allegedly drive drunk has forever impacted the families.
"These are all tragic and preventable deaths. That's the most tragic thing about them. People, just not drink and drive. If you're going to drink get a sober driver," said Sergeant Jeffrey Houston of the Arlington Police department.
Westbrook is facing two counts of intoxication manslaughter.
