Life Sentence After 5th Drunk Driving Conviction

SAN MARCOS (AP) - A 45-year-old Central Texas man is going to prison for at least 15 years after receiving his fifth conviction for drunken driving.

A jury in San Marcos has sentenced Luis Torres Govea of San Marcos to life imprisonment. Hays County District Attorney Sherri Tibbe said Thursday that he must serve at least 15 years of that sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

She said the Hays County jury deliberated about two hours before agreeing to prosecutors' recommendation for the life sentence for being a habitual criminal. The trial lasted three days.

Govea was arrested in February after a San Marcos police officer saw him drive away from a bar and commit a series of traffic violations. Govea failed a field sobriety test.
