HOWE, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — A flight instructor died and a student pilot was hospitalized following a helicopter crash Tuesday night.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says the two-seat Hughes 269-C lost power and crashed near Howe, about 50 miles north of Dallas.

DPS says 58-year-old Daniel Katen of Lewisville died at a Sherman hospital.

Staff Sgt. Mark Tackett says the student pilot and helicopter owner, 44-year-old Matthew Cavender from Howe, was hospitalized in Dallas for treatment of back injuries.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the chopper to crash while doing maneuvers.
