Cook Children's Pediatrician Raises Awareness Of Childhood Cancer

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A Cook Children's pediatrician is waging her own battle against cancer, but she said what she is going through pales in comparison to what child cancer patients are having to deal with.

Dr. Sandra Peak has dedicated her life's work to treating children, and earlier this year after a breast cancer diagnosis, she was the one left in searching of care.

"I was kind of consumed in this world of cancer, and in a moment I went from being a physician to being a cancer patient," said Dr. Peak.

Dr. Sandra Peak's journey has inspired her to pen a heartfelt message.

In a recent blog written by the pediatrician, Dr. Peak said she doesn't want anyone to feel bad for her but instead to increase awareness on what she calls a lack of funding and research for childhood cancers.

"15,000 kids a year. That's a classroom full of kids a day that are diagnosed with cancer," added Dr. Peak.

She said out of all the money allocated by the federal government for cancer research only four-percent of it is used for pediatric cancer research.

Dr. Peak has six weeks left before her chemotherapy is complete.

Her prognosis is great, but she wishes the same could be said about more children who are battling cancer.

"I think the hardest thing you could go through as a pediatrician is to attend the funeral of one of your patients," said Dr. Peak.
