An 80-year-old woman has died after a house fire on Thursday in Ecorse, Michigan.

The fire happened on 12th Street, where authorities discovered Mary Jackson. They say Jackson was the only person inside the house.

"We found flames coming out the front side of the building with heavy black smoke on the other three sides of the building," said Fire Chief Daniel Wright.

Jackson's granddaughter, Crystal Tate, said she was a believer in love and community.

"My grandmother is a phenomenal woman. She's a God-fearing woman; she's the matriarch of my family," Tate said. "Her father built this house with his hands."

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Meanwhile, Jackson's family goes through the grieving process, saying the loss will not defeat them.

"My grandma's been there forever, and I thought she'd be here forever, and she will because her spirit will always live on, " Tate said. "She gave so much of herself to help and nurture and provide for others."
