Mayor Bing and City Council Battle Over Detroit Cable

What could be an expensive legal battle is underway between Mayor Dave Bing and the Detroit City Council. It's over control of the city's cable access programming.

WWJ's Vicki Thomas reports that Mayor Dave Bing has followed through on a threatened lawsuit. He filed it on Monday to block the City Council and its plan for the cable commission.

"They had a unanimous vote that they would have four positions on the cable commission and we would have three. And, that's illegal. They can't do it," says Bing.

The mayor and his administration are no longer getting any face time on cable. Reporter Vicki Thomas asked the mayor if the financially-strapped city can afford this lawsuit.

"It's not about affordability as far as I'm concerned because I don't think it's going to be some long protracted lawsuit. What they could do is not even fund the cable, so nobody is on," says Bing.
