Man Charged With Shooting Dad At Dinner Table, Also Accused Of Shooting Detroit Cop

DETROIT (WWJ) - A young man who allegedly shot a Detroit police officer Monday night has been charged with shooting his own father over the weekend.

According to investigators, 21-year-old Marquise Cromer of Detroit was at home on Dickerson Street with dad, Sterling Cromer, on Sunday when he pointed and fired a shotgun at the older man as he was eating dinner at the dining room table.

The elder Cromer was shot in the foot but was able to run to his neighbor's house for help.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's office says Marquise then pointed the shotgun at his stepmother who told him to stop. When her stepson lowered the weapon, prosecutors say, she also fled the home.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the suspect was arrested late Monday after he fled pursing officers and shot one of them with a sawed-off shotgun on the city's east side.

Cromer was arraigned in 36th District Tuesday on two counts of assault with intent to murder, firearms discharge in a building causing injury and felony firearm in connection with Sunday's shooting. Magistrate Millicent Sherman set bond at $750,000 cash/surety and scheduled a probable cause conference for Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Meantime, the officer who was shot was being treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder. Craig said the injured sergeant — a 17-year veteran of the department — was expected to be OK.

Charges have not yet been announced in connection with the Monday night incident.
