Detroit police chief calls for action after violent weekend

The Detroit Police Department is investigating several violent incidents that occurred over the weekend, including a deadly double shooting and a quadruple shooting that left a 10-year-old boy injured. 

Detroit police say a 15-year-old boy is in custody after two relatives of a DPD sergeant were shot at a liquor store on East Warren Street on Friday.

"We may not ever know why he did what he did, but we do know that the family is grieving, and we will support them in their time of loss. There is no reason that can justify this pain," said Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison.

One woman was killed, and another remains hospitalized.

While now grieving, the family of the victims shared a message of forgiveness.

"We also ask that you pray for the young man who did this because we never know what's on people's mind, and although it's tragic, if God forgives us, we not to forgive him for any sin that we commit," said Lucinda Pearson.

On Haverhill Street, four people were shot on Friday, including a 10-year-old boy. All survived, but one woman remains in critical condition as police are still looking for information.

On Stoepel Street, a well-being check on Thursday led police to find a 14-year-old boy and a 50-year-old woman dead inside a home from an apparent murder-suicide.

Investigators returned Friday after learning the woman's husband had not been seen in years and found skeletal remains in the basement.

Police believe all three were family members and died from apparent gunshot wounds.

"If something doesn't seem right or doesn't feel right, I encourage and urge everyone to speak up. We have to check on each other, look out for one another, work together to prevent tragedies like this from happening before they happen," said Bettison.

In the East Warren shooting, police say a warrant request has been submitted to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for the 15-year-old suspect.
