Human remains discovered in Detroit home where 2 other people were found dead

Police in Detroit say human remains were found inside a home on the city's west side Friday, the day after officials found a man and a woman dead in the residence.

Officers were called to the home on the 15500 block of Stoepel Street around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday for a reason that has yet to be disclosed by police. They discovered the man and woman after responding to the call.

"Over the course of our investigation, we became aware of another person associated with the residence," the Detroit Police Department said in a written statement. "We learned that the person had not been seen in some time."

The city agency went on to say investigators on Friday returned to the home, where they discovered the remains of an unknown person in the basement.

According to police, there is no threat to the public and the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office is working to identify the three individuals.

A nearby resident told CBS News Detroit on Friday that she filed a complaint with the city over a week ago after noticing a foul odor in the area that had lingered in the area for weeks. Other neighbors also said they'd been detecting the rancid smell for some time.
