Four people, including child, hurt in Detroit drive-by shooting, police say

Detroit police say they are investigating a drive-by shooting that injured four people, including a child, on Friday.

Police say the shooting happened just before 6 p.m. in the 3700 block of Haverhill Street. Detroit Assistant Chief Kari Sloan says the four victims were leaving the home when an unknown vehicle pulled up and a person inside fired shots.

The victims were identified as a 40-year-old woman, a man who wis around 40 years old, a man in his 20s and a 10-year-old child. Sloan says the woman, who is the child's mother, is listed in critical condition, while the other victims are expected to be OK.

Sloan says the other two male victims are relatives.

Details on a suspect were not immediately released, but Sloan says a weapon was recovered at the scene.

In a statement, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield called the shooting "senseless and indiscriminate violence." Sheffield also offered support for the child's mother, saying, "Our thoughts are with her and her family at this difficult time as we pray for her recovery."

Tamara Smith, program manager of Ceasefire Detroit, is urging people to "do the right thing" and come forward.

"If you see something, if you know something, speak up," Smith said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 800-Speak Up.
