Caution Urged As Icy Storm Moves Across Metro Detroit; Winter Weather Advisory In Effect Until Noon
DETROIT (WWJ) - It's going to be messy out there as snow turns to a wintry mix throughout the day.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon Saturday for all of southeast Michigan.
Several inches of new snow fell overnight on the metro Detroit area. Two inches were recorded in Southfield, while Wixom and White Lake got 2.5 inches. Flint, Ann Arbor and Romulus all had about 3 inches of snow, and Bad Axe and Peck in the thumb region reported as much as 5 inches.
Some cities have declared snow emergencies so crews will have an easier time plowing streets, including Berkley, Bloomfield Township, Garden City, Livonia, Oak Park, Plymouth, St. Clair, Southgate and Trenton. Residents in those cities must move their vehicles off the streets or face fines or even have their cars towed.
Forecasters say a mix of snow and freezing drizzle will continue across the area Saturday morning, which could leave a light coating of ice behind. An additional inch of snow is expected.
Periods of rain will cause travel difficulties, with some roads snow-covered and others wet and slushy. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility and use caution while driving. Untreated roads will be especially hazardous.
The good news is that Saturday is forecast to be much warmer than yesterday. On Friday, high temperatures were around 19 degrees with lows around 7; Saturday is looking at a high around 31 degrees and a low around 20.
Unfortunately, the same thing can't be said for Sunday -- record low temperatures are expected overnight into Monday around -1 degrees. Then the high temperature on Monday will only reach about 10 degrees.
Here's the local forecast from the CBS Detroit weather team:
Saturday -- Periods of freezing drizzle this morning will change to a wintry mix for the afternoon. High 31F.
Saturday Night -- A mix of wintry precipitation this evening. Then mainly cloudy overnight. Low near 20F.
Sunday -- Sunshine and clouds mixed. A few flurries or snow showers possible. High near 20F.
Sunday Night -- Partly cloudy skies. Near record low temperatures. Low -1F.
Monday -- A mainly sunny sky. High 11F.
Monday Night -- A mostly clear sky. Low 3F.
