INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Connecticut defensive back Byron Jones' record-breaking performance had the NFL world abuzz Monday.

He soared 12 feet, 3 inches in the broad jump -- 15 inches farther than Florida State's P.J. Williams, who was second among the defensive backs working out at the league's annual scouting combine Monday.

That is 8 inches longer than anyone listed in the combine database and former longtime NFL executive Gil Brandt, who now works for NFL.com, said he believes Jones' jump set the all-time mark at the event.

Jones was not just a one-event wonder, either. His vertical jump of 44.5 inches also was the best of the day, 3 inches higher than Florida State's Ron Darby.

He did not, however, run the 40-yard dash or participate in the bench press test.
