Franklin Cider Mill
7450 Franklin Road
Bloomfield Hills, MI 48301
(248) 626-2968
www.franklincidermill.com

Not only does the Franklin Cider Mill have fresh spice doughnuts, it also sells - you guessed it - cider. Its cider is actually pressed and bottled on location, which makes it taste fresh and delicious. The doughnuts are made using an old German recipe that was brought to the U.S. many years ago. The cider mill opens Labor Day weekend and stays open until the first weekend after Thanksgiving, and it has a few picnic benches around for which to sit and enjoy your doughnut and cider.

Dutch Girl Donuts
19000 Woodward Ave.
Detroit, MI 48203
(313) 368-3020

Dutch Girl Donuts has been compared to Krispy Kreme, and some even say that it's better than the franchise. The store is usually open 24 hours, as well, if you're looking for a late-night doughnut fix, but it does close on Saturday nights when it runs out of offerings (around 8 p.m. usually) and doesn't reopen until Monday morning. Dutch Girl Donuts sells everything from crullers, to fritters to mini doughnut holes, and it is known for its fresh and homemade goods. Be aware that it is cash only, no credit cards accepted.

Social Kitchen & Bar
225 E. Maple Road
Birmingham, MI 48009
(248) 594-4200
www.socialkitchenandbar.com

Social Kitchen might not be your standard doughnut shop, but customers rave about its dessert doughnuts, which are covered in cinnamon and sugar and served in a paper bag. They've been compared to cider mill-type doughnuts; warm and fresh. They are $7 and come in packs of three. Social Kitchen opened in 2012 in downtown Birmingham and is the creation of Zack Skylar, who also founded Cutting Edge Cuisine, a catering company started when he was studying at the Culinary Institute of America.

The Looney Baker
13931 Farmington Road
Livonia, MI 48154
(734) 425-8569
The Looney Baker is also open 24 hours daily and it serves doughtnuts and sweet treats as well as sandwiches and lunch-type items. The shop is family owned and John Watchpocket is the baker, who has been cooking from scratch for the past 25 years. The Looney Baker is known for its apple fritters as well as its doughnuts tasting fresh all of the time, regardless of what time you stop by. The shop also has a drive-through if you're wanting a doughnut on the go.

Dom Bakeries
1305 Washtenaw Road
Ypsilanti, MI 48197
(734) 485-3175
Dom Bakeries is open 24 hours a day, including its drive-through, but the best time to stop in is between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. as even more doughnuts are made fresh at that time. The bakery is cash only, but is inexpensive and has an ATM inside in case you arrive unprepared. Dom Bakeries has some interesting doughnut flavors, as well, including a red velvet doughnut and long johns with custard filling. The bakery is located within walking distance from Eastern Michigan University and it sells cookies, cakes and muffins, as well as fresh coffee, in addition to the doughnuts.
