UNC Enacts Hiring Freeze, Other Cost-Cutting Plans

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) -- University of Northern Colorado President Kay Norton has announced plans to freeze some hiring to help cover a projected $14 million shortfall in the next school year.

Norton said Wednesday that the university in Greeley will freeze the hiring of all non-faculty positions with annual salaries of more than $25,000. The Greeley Tribune reports that Norton is also asking UNC employees to help find $5 million in permanent cuts.

Norton says the university will immediately carry out strategies for covering the anticipated funding shortfall, including putting off equipment and technology purchases and capital projects. The school is also assessing travel expenses.
