Feds Seek Death Penalty In 2 Colorado Prison Slayings
DENVER (AP) - Federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in two separate prison killings in Colorado. One of the slayings is the first at the Supermax prison that houses the country's most notorious criminals such as Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui and "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski.
The Denver Post reported Tuesday that prosecutors recently filed notice in U.S. District Court to seek the death penalty against 51-year-old Richard Santiago. He's accused in the beating death of Manual Torrez in a yard at Supermax in 2005. A second inmate accused in the slaying won't face the death penalty.
Prosecutors also filed notice that they'll seek the death penalty for 48-old Gary Douglas Watland in the slaying of Mark James Baker. Baker was stabbed while in a common area at the U.S. Penitentiary in 2008.
