Iran says its talks with Omani counterparts about reopening the Strait of Hormuz have been productive, while a key Trump administration official says President Trump is giving diplomacy a chance. But the official also shared a warning.
Talks between Oman and Iran on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and their respective territorial waterways have made progress, two sources told CBS News.
Two U.S. service members were killed earlier in Jordan and a third was missing in action, the U.S. Central Command said.
As the U.S. restarts its Iran blockade and carries out more strikes, President Trump has called off a planned 20% fee on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
When asked why he backed off plans to impose a 20% fee on ships traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, the president said instead that Gulf countries will be making more investments and trade deals with the U.S.
The president also says the U.S. plans to act as a guardian for the important waterway and will charge cargo ships a 20% security fee. However, Iran says they will not allow the U.S. to interfere in the management of the strait.
After trading strikes with Iran, President Trump said on social media Monday that the U.S. is reinstating the Iranian blockade and would charge 20% on all cargo ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
