The Sox closed to to 3-2 in the sixth when Andrew Vaughn and Luis Robert Jr. hit consecutive homers.
The team is only nine games under .500 and four-and-a-half games back of first place despite its two tough losses last weekend.
Clevinger allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.
The league said in a statement the decision was made in consultation with medical and weather experts.
Mike Clevinger pitched three-hit ball over five innings in first start since May 17.
Lance Lynn allowed eight runs, eight hits and two walks while hitting two batters in four innings, raising his ERA to 6.55.
The White Sox turned it around in a big way, scoring five runs in the fourth against Tyler Anderson (2-1).
"It was very humbling and a sobering moment for me, because just realizing that the impact my wife and I have had around this city with what we've been able to do" Hendriks said after the game.
Hendriks pitched the eighth in his first big league appearance since he was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Hendriks could provide a big lift for a Chicago team that has struggled for much of the season.
Kopech walked one and extended his shutout streak to 15 innings in his last two outings.
Kopech simply toyed with the Royals as the White Sox opened a weekend series between teams with two of the majors' worst records on a winning note.
There is still no official timetable for when the Sox expect Hendriks back on the active roster.
Dylan Cease (2-3) was charged with three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings.
