CHICAGO (CBS) -- A man was facing charges Tuesday afternoon after he fled from Hammond, Indiana to the South Side of Chicago with a 4-year-old in the car, officials said.

It was just after 5 p.m. Tuesday when Highland, Indiana police tried to pull over a black BMW in Hammond, according to the Lake County, Indiana Sheriff's office. The officers were participating in a joint law enforcement operation involving many police agencies at the time.

The driver sped off, and Highland police began a pursuit—with the Lake County, Indiana Sheriff's Department and its aviation unit helicopter assisting.

The driver headed to Torrence Avenue in Hammond—a different street from Chicago's Torrence Avenue—and then got on I-94 and crossed the state line.

Near 53rd and Morgan streets in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood, officers used an unspecified immobilization technique to stop the BMW. A man got out and ran off, leaving a 4-year-old child in the car, the sheriff's office said.

The driver kept running until a stun device was used on him, the sheriff's office said.

The driver was a 26-year-old man from Illinois, who was taken to a Chicago correctional facility and will be extradited to Indiana. He faces charges of felony fleeing, reckless endangerment of a child, and marijuana possession.

His name was not released.
