Elderly woman dies after fire blamed on smoking on South Side of Chicago
An elderly woman died in a fire blamed on careless use of smoking materials Tuesday afternoon in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago.
The fire started around 4:15 p.m. in a home in the 9400 block of South Lowe Avenue.
Police said an 88-year-old woman was found unresponsive in the living room, with burns to her body, and was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been identified as Gwendolynn Smith, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Fire Department officials said the fire most likely was caused by careless use of smoking materials.
Firefighters returned to the block on Wednesday to talk to neighbors about what happened and distribute free smoke detectors.
