Angel Gonzalez Free From Prison After Rape Charges Vacated
(CBS) -- For the first time in 20-years a Waukegan man sat down to dinner as a free man.
Angel Gonzalez left jail and headed to the Potbelly's in Dekalb.
Gonzalez spent the past two decades behind bars for a crime he didn't commit.
On Monday, he was exonerated for abducting and raping a woman back in 1994.
Prosecutors say they had no choice but to release Gonzalez after DNA failed to link him to the crime.
Attorney Lauren Kaesenberg with the Innocence Project says Angel Gonzalez is on his way to citizenship.
"He was on the path toward citizenship and now that these convictions have been dismissed and completely vacated he is back on that path," Kaesenberg. "We're confident that very shortly he'll have an official status."
