Driver Charged In Fatal Cape Hit And Run Free On Bail

BARNSTABLE (CBS) -- The woman charged in a hit and run crash that killed a man on the Cape is free on bail, much to the dismay of the victim's family.

Sarah Hunt, 33, pleaded not guilty Monday to motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, and operating a motor vehicle with an open container of alcohol at her arraignment in Barnstable District Court.

Police said Hunt struck 62-year-old John Pina while he was crossing Route 28 in Centerville near the Bell Tower Mall Friday night.

She turned herself in to police Saturday afternoon.

Hunt posted $2,500 bail Monday and was set free. She had no comment for reporters at court.

Pina's family attended the arraignment. "She's going to enjoy lunch, we're going to plan a funeral," said Bill Pina, the victim's brother.

According to police, Hunt got out of her car after the crash Friday night, checked on Pina, then got back in her car and drove away. Hunt has two young children at home.

"Her life has changed, our lives have changed," said Ken Pina, the victim's brother. "You know her kids got to deal with it, she's got some little kids that got to deal with this, with what their mom did."

Hunt is due back in court February 23.
