Trooper Hurt By Bullet Fragment At State Police Academy
NEW BRAINTREE (CBS) – A state trooper was wounded by a bullet fragment at the State Police Academy in New Braintree Friday morning.
In a statement, police said the "extremely small" bullet fragment "ricocheted into his leg in a firing range."
"The ricochet came from a rifle round that had been fired by the trooper himself. The trooper, who is a range instructor, was alone in the range at the time and was firing an M&P15 rifle at a metal target 15 yards down the range. The trooper remained conscious and reported the injury himself."
He was treated at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
The trooper's name was not released.
"It is routine for instructors to regularly fire weapons as part of their duties," the statement said.
