Supreme Court Refuses To Hear Alexander Hamilton Letter Case, Returning Document To Massachusetts

BOSTON (CBS) – A historical letter belonging to Alexander Hamilton will stay in the state's hands. The letter in question is a 1780 note Hamilton wrote to the Marquis de Lafayette.

A family says they rightfully purchased the letter back in 1945. The state insists it was stolen by a former employee of the Massachusetts Archives during World War II.

A legal court battle ended Monday with the Supreme Court refusing to hear the case. A lower court ruling stands, saying the note belongs to the state.
