This Cockamamie Fake PAT Kick Was Easily The Most Ridiculous Play Of The Weekend

By Matt Dolloff (@mattdolloff)

BOSTON (CBS) -- The NFL is usually good for a couple of creative trick plays every weekend, and college football certainly has its share of trickeration. That's where the wildest play of the weekend came from - and it happened in a Division III game.

St. Thomas College of the vaunted Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) led Carleton College 6-3 late in the first quarter, and decided to horse around and run the fake PAT play in the above video. It starts off like a standard fake with the holder assuming the QB position...except things get really zany when he throws the ball underhand, backward, without looking. And it WORKS!

They successfully converted the 2-point conversion to go up 59-3 8-3, and went on to win 80-3. So you could very much have a case that St. Thomas was being unsportsmanlike with these shenanigans - but then again, it was a no-look pass - they practically dared Carleton to pick it off and take it the other way.

CORRECTION (11/11/15): Thanks to an alert from an emailer, I have learned that the fake PAT play came early in the game when St. Thomas was up by only 3 points. It's important to note this because it significantly changes the perception of the play-call, which may have been construed as unsportsmanlike had it been done during a blowout.

The no-look pass is a common move on the basketball court, but something you NEVER see on the gridiron. Until St. Thomas proved here that they are just ahead of the curve from everyone else. A classic chess vs. checkers situation.

Expect Bill Belichick to poach some of their coaches this week.
