SWAT officer wounded, suspect dead after shooting in Spencer, Massachusetts
A SWAT officer was shot multiple times while responding to a barricaded suspect at a shopping center in Spencer, Massachusetts on Tuesday night. According to I-Team sources, the suspect is dead.
There was a large police presence at the Big Y shopping plaza on Route 9 on the west side of Spencer for much of the night.
The officer who was shot is a Millbury police officer, and a member of the CEMLEC SWAT team, according to Millbury Police Chief Brian Lewos.
According to I-Team sources, the officer who was shot has serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
The officer was transported to the hospital and is in stable condition.
"We ask that you keep the officer, the officers family and fellow officers in mind during this difficult time," Chief Lewos said in a statement.
MassDOT announced a temporary closure of Route 9 between West Main Street and South Spencer Road in Spencer due to the police activity at the shopping center. Drivers traveling through the area should expect delays and are advised to seek alternative routes.
A Big Y grocery store and Family Dollar are among the businesses in the shopping plaza.
Spencer is a town in Worcester County, about 50 miles west of Boston.
