South Boston Park Gives Adults A Place To Play

BOSTON (CBS) - From ping pong and bocce to corn hole and swing time. It is a new twist on an old idea.

Executive Director of the Mass. Convention Center Authority Jim Rooney says, "We wanted to experiment a little bit and bring a coolness factor to the South Boston waterfront."

This is a pop up park and it's like nothing you have seen in Boston before.

A visitor says, "We just came down to check it out."

This is a park geared for the grown-ups. There are lots of games and cool seating, there is a bar and even live music. All of this, on the site of a former dirt lot outside the Convention Center, it was wasted land until the Mass Convention Center Authority wanted to try something totally new.

Jim Rooney says, "I hope the combo of functional design and programming can be applied... hopefully providing lessons to people."

The goal was to be functional and have art that could be used and enjoyed, like floating circle swings.

Gina Ford works with Sasaki associates and she helped with the plans. She says, "I think it's a nationwide trend, art is moving away the object you look at to the thing you engage with and experience."

And so far, it's a hit.

Ford says, "We have seen so much activity it's kind of extraordinary."

The park will stay open until Halloween, then close until Spring. It will be closed for good in a year and moved to a new location, after the Convention Center expansion.
