Phantom Gourmet: S'mores-Flavored Snacks Taste Test
BOSTON (CBS) -- Phantom recently purchased four packages of s'mores flavored snacks from a local supermarket. The contenders were Goldfish, Oreo, Pop-Tarts, and Rice Krispies treats. See if you can guess which sweet treat ended up at the top of the food chain.
Rice Krispies treats finished in last place. The box touts these as a 'blasted' version of the classic snack, but Phantom thinks they're more like a 'busted' version. The individually wrapped treats are shockingly small, especially when compared to the super sized picture on the box. But the real problem here is the disappointingly stingy amount of chocolate and graham cracker pieces sparingly sprinkled on top of each treat, imparting virtually no s'more flavor whatsoever.
Rolling its way to only a slightly better finish is Oreo. The s'more version of this snack certainly looked the part, as Phantom peeled open the resealable package to reveal graham cracker flavored cookies stuffed with chocolate and marshmallow flavored filling. Unfortunately, every element of these Oreo's just taste fake, proving that looks really can be deceiving.
The runner up is Goldfish. This attractive bag is packed with marshmallow, chocolate, and graham cracker flavored fish. If you get a proper ratio of fish in each handful, there is a decent s'more flavor to be experienced. The marshmallow pieces impart a pleasant textural contrast, but if you're like Phantom, you might just mine them out and eat them alone.
At the top of the food chain are Pop-Tarts. The other competitors just didn't stand a chance against this guilty pleasure. With chocolate icing, graham flavored pastry, and chocolate and marshmallow filling, they're pretty good straight out of the box. But a minute in the toaster imparts a bit of warmth and meltiness that transforms this snack into a solid substitute for the campfire classic. That's why s'mores flavored Pop-Tarts are at the top of the food chain.
