No Bail For Driver In Police-Involved Shooting In Salem

SALEM (CBS) – A Peabody man was ordered held without bail Wednesday after a wild confrontation and a police shooting in Salem overnight.

Officers spotted what they called a "suspicious" car just after 1 a.m. in the parking lot of Shetland Properties on Congress Street.

When they approached the Toyota, they thought the driver, later identified as 25-year-old Austin Boga was overdosing. Instead, they said Bosa sped off, going so fast the officers thought they wouldn't have time to get out of the way as he tried to run them down. That's when police fired as many as four shots at the Toyota.

Boga was grazed in the arm, but that didn't stop him. He continued driving and crashed at a nearby Wendy's restaurant on the corner of Lafayette and Peabody streets. Boga got out of the car and ran along the Harborwalk before jumping into the water. He was caught a short time later and taken to the hospital.

Two officers were treated for stress after the incident.

Boga was arraigned in Salem District Court on several charges, including assault and battery, resisting arrest and speeding.

He will be held without bail until a probable cause hearing on November 4.

Yulissa Arias is a neighbor who witnessed part of the incident.

"There was a lot of police running and a man running too. The ambulance came. it was crazy," said Arias. "It was like 'boom' and I woke up to see what was happening. Police were there and smoke was coming out of the car"

The driver whose car was totaled by Boga spoke to WBZ-TV, but asked not to be identified.

"I don't know why he did it. Crime doesn't pay. He should have pulled over and not done that whole chase," the driver said.
