RI Hires Auditor To Probe 38 Studios' Finances

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee says the state has selected an auditor to review the finances of former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's troubled video game company.

Chafee announced Wednesday that Deloitte Financial Advisory Services will audit 38 Studios.

The video game company was lured to Rhode Island from Massachusetts in 2010 with a $75 million loan guarantee from the state. The firm laid off its staff last week.

Chafee says details of the audit have yet to be determined, but he wants it to focus on how 38 Studios spent its money and whether any went to Schilling.

The 2010 financing deal requires 38 Studios to pay for such an audit. No cost estimate was available Wednesday.

Calls to Schilling were not immediately returned Wednesday.
