Report: Rex Ryan Could Be Fired As Soon As Monday After Loss To Steelers
BOSTON (CBS) -- Less than two full seasons into his career as Buffalo Bills head coach, Rex Ryan's job could be in jeopardy. CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported on Sunday that a source close to the situation believes that Rex's tenure is coming to and end and that he could be fired as soon as Monday.
The Bills, who started 4-2 and beat the Patriots at Gillette Stadium in Week 4, are now 6-7 after a 27-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in which they allowed 460 total yards of offense, including 298 total yards to Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell alone. Even if Rex survives the season, the source told La Canfora that it would take "an overwhelming performance down the stretch" for Ryan to be back in 2017.
Rex was asked about the report after the game on Sunday and said, "Guys, I'll promise you one thing: This is the first I've heard of it. ... I never knew about [the report] until you guys just said something, so that will tell you how true it is."
The report indicates that the inner turmoil in Buffalo stems from Rex's "rocky" relationship with Bills general manager Doug Whaley. The decision to hire Rex's brother Rob Ryan as "assistant head coach/defense" reportedly "has not been well-received," and the Bills' ugly defensive performance against Bell and the Steelers on Sunday likely only exacerbated the problem.
According to the report, Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor is also falling out of favor with the front office and could be benched before the end of the season. The team is reportedly unlikely to pick up Taylor's five-year option in 2017, which would mean $31 million in new guaranteed money. The Bills could be moving on to rookie fourth-round pick Cardale Jones at quarterback sooner rather than later.
Whether it happens Monday or during the offseason, it appears there will be a lot of turnover in the Bills organization in the near future.
