Red Sox, Andrew Miller Agree To One-Year Deal

BOSTON (CBS) – The Boston Red Sox have re-signed lefty Andrew Miller, the team announced Tuesday.

The two sides agreed to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract, avoiding salary arbitration.

In 17 games for Boston in 2011, Miller went 6-3 with a 5.54 ERA. He made 12 starts, allowing three runs or less in eight of them. Boston went 9-3 during those outings.

Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent prior to the 2011 campaign, he also started in 12 games with Triple-A Pawtucket last season, going 3-3 with a 2.47 ERA and 61 strikeouts over 13 total appearances. Miller held minor league batters to a .181 batting average.

Miller was drafted sixth overall by Detroit in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. The 26-year-old has a career record of 21-29 with an ERA of 5.79 in 96 appearances with the Tigers, Marlins and Red Sox.

Miller will be an option for the Red Sox at the back-end of their rotation as they look for replacements for Daisuke Matsuzaka and John Lackey. Miller was not great as a starter by any means, but could be a cheap alternative to signing a big name, high-priced free agent over the offseason.
