Rafael Devers returns to Fenway Park with Giants. How will fans react?
Rafael Devers returns to Fenway Park on Friday with the San Francisco Giants. Will fans give their former franchise face any forgiveness?
The unceremonious way the relationship ended between Devers and the Boston Red Sox is still on people's minds. Devers was traded to the Giants following a public dispute over the team choosing to play Alex Bregman over him at third base last season.
"I felt OK, I wasn't torn either way," said Jenna Fitz talking about the trade. "I cheer, everyone is a good person."
"I think I will boo him personally, and I think everyone else will too," said Red Sox fan Hayden Eskridge.
"I hope that the eight years he was here outweighs the three months of him being tumultuous with the front office and fans," said Giants fan Jason Wakimoto, reminding Red Sox fans of the good times.
"A slow clap. I'm not going to cheer, but not going to boo him," added another torn Red Sox fan, Stefan Wieclawek. "I will always remember him as a Yankee killer. A Gerrit Cole killer."
Devers endeared himself to Sox fans by abusing their biggest rival. Of his 260 career home runs, 31 came against the Bronx Bombers, with eight coming off of their ace Gerrit Cole. In his last game with the Red Sox, he hit a solo shot against New York.
"I have been back and forth on what I am going to do [when he comes to bat]," said Eskridge. "He won a World Series here. Great player. Yankee killer, but he was kind of a jerk at the end."
Devers has played most of this season at first base, which is the same position he told the Red Sox he wouldn't move to. Fans have not forgotten.
"I think the longer it goes the more appreciative people will be of him down the road. Once it's less fresh," said Wieclawek.
Until then, there may be a few boo birds in the stands.
