Malcolm Butler's Approach Remains Same: Stay Humble

BOSTON (CBS) -- Life changed significantly for Malcolm Butler the second he picked off Russell Wilson in February, securing New England's Super Bowl XLIX victory.

But all of the recognition and fanfare hasn't gotten to the corner as he prepares for the 2015 season.

Butler was everywhere over the offseason, from his post-Super Bowl trip to Disneyland to presenting at the Grammys. But even as his life off the field ramps up, his approach on it has remained the same.

All Butler has to do is think back to the 2014 preseason, when he was a relatively unknown undrafted corner fighting for a roster spot on a team with a stacked secondary. He worked hard despite the long odds, and made enough of an impression to land on the active roster. He played sparingly at times during the regular season, but obviously rose to the occasion at the biggest moment on the biggest stage.

Now, with Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner both in different uniforms, Butler is the defacto No. 1 corner on the Patriots depth chart. Still, he remains as humble as ever.

"Sometimes when you think you've done enough and you really haven't when it comes down to it, and you have a bad day or bad game or something like that, you're like 'I should have worked harder and not thought like that.' You always have to keep yourself humble and work hard, like last year when I was trying to make this team," Butler said Tuesday following New England's practice at Gillette Stadium.

"Nothing has changed, really," he added. "I just have to keep getting better and learn for my mistakes."

Despite some hefty praise for his play during camp, Butler said there have been plenty of those humbling moments this summer. What he did six months ago in Arizona is in the back of his mind now, as he gets ready for whatever comes his way during the 2015 season.

He's starting the season off with a couple of very good tests in the preseason. Butler only played 15 snaps in New England's 15-11 loss to the Packers, with a few passes from quarterback Aaron Rodgers heading his way. Now he's preparing to see another one of the NFC's best quarterbacks in New Orleans' Drew Brees on Saturday night.

Even though these battles with some of the premier passers are coming when games don't count, it's a challenge Butler is more than up to.

"It should be [a great test]," he said of Saturday's second preseason game against the Saints. "They come out and try to come out after us just like we're going out trying to get after them. It's all about competing and going hard on every play. We'll see how it turns out."

With those two huge departures in the secondary, things will absolutely look different on the New England defense when the games start to matter. But again for Butler, like everything else with his game, the approach remains the same.

"A couple of good guys left, but we have some pretty good guys here also," said Butler. "Just different players. We still come out here and work hard every day, just like it was last year."
