2 Charged In Connection With Orange Murder Will Be Returned To Massachusetts

BOSTON (CBS) – Two people suspected of killing an elderly Orange man and seriously injuring his wife are expected to appear in court on Friday after they were arrested in Virginia earlier this week.

Athol residents Joshua Hart and Brittany Smith were arrested Saturday in Rockbridge, Virginia. They were found in a U-Haul truck that was parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

The pair was wanted in connection to the October 5 murder of 95-year-old Thomas Harty, who was found dead inside his East River Street home. Harty's wife, 77-year-old Joanna Fisher, was seriously injured in what was called an apparent home invasion.

On Wednesday, the Northwest District Attorney's office announced that Hart and Smith waived rendition and are expected to be arraigned in Orange District Court on Friday.

Prosecutors have not yet said if Harty and Fisher were targeted or if the attack was random.
