NH Warns About Utility Phone Scam

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire attorney general's office is warning consumers about a phone scam involving callers pretending to be from utility companies.

The state has received a number of complaints about individuals who call and say they're with a utility company and threaten to turn of someone's power if they don't pay an overdue bill. The calls are typically made to small business customers late in the day and the customer is given only a few hours to make the payment.

Authorities say the calls are not coming from New Hampshire utility companies. Under state law, utility customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice at least 14 days in advance.
