Newton To Consider Fee For Single-Use Grocery Bags

NEWTON (CBS) - Newton's Programs and Services Committee is holding an open meeting Wednesday night to consider a new fee on single-use plastic and paper bags offered at stores in the town.

The proposition would require stores to impose a fee on customers that used single-use plastic and paper bags that "are not at least 40 percent post-consumer recycled material."

The Committee claims the purpose is to encourage "environmentally preferable alternatives" and that a portion of the collected fees will be put into a "Plastic Bag Cleanup Fund."

The meeting is being held at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Newton City Hall.
