National Grid To Lay Off 1,200 Workers

WALTHAM (AP) - Electric and natural gas utility National Grid is announcing a major reorganization of its U.S. operations that will cost 1,200 jobs, but which the company says will improve service and save $200 million.

The company said Monday that the restructuring takes effect in April.

Tom King, president of National Grid US, will assume responsibility for all U.S. business segments, while new regional presidents will be appointed for Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island/New Hampshire.

King said in a conference call that the company wants to focus more locally and be more responsive to customers, regulators and shareholders.

The company also is trying to reduce management to speed decision-making and accountability.

He says the job cuts represent about 7 percent of the company's 18,000 employees.
